Unpaid Internships Violate Labor Laws

It’s about time unpaid internships got some attention. Companies are undoubtedly offering unpaid internships in order to decrease the number of hired employees necessary which violates labor laws.

I have come across many, full-time internships that are completely unpaid, meaning no stipend offered for food or transportation. This means that the person is actually forced to spend money to work. Experience alone is thought to be payment enough. However, as many people are now accepting jobs they are overqualified for, while this “valuable experience” makes the resume a little longer, it is less likely to impress hiring coordinators or to secure a job in the future.

Many students cannot afford to take these kinds of internships because they need to have a job – one where they actually make money. This attributes to a decrease in the circulation of income as those students or recent graduates who are able to accept these unpaid internships are likely to be financially supported.

Nancy J. Leppink, the acting director of the Labor Department was quoted in a New York Times article saying, “If you’re a for-profit employer or you want to pursue an internship with a for-profit employer, there aren’t going to be many circumstances where you can have an internship and not be paid and still be in compliance with the law.” It’s time to stop exploiting unpaid interns.

It's certainly a sign of the economic times. I agree that some type of reimbursement would be great, but being able to gather experience on the job is invaluable. If companies are forced into paying every internship, I fear there would be very few of them to gather some experience. These internships are a great way to network and add to your resume. Think about the employees at any given company who are afraid to lose their 'paid' jobs to interns.

Internships should be paid!

I had an unpaid internship in college, and it was a great experience. However, the Labor Department should force companies to at least pay for interns' food and transportation. While experience is a valuable learning tool, if interns have to put money into getting this experience, how valuable is it really? Students are struggling, and need a position that will pay them.
