Too Young for Social Networking?

At what age is it appropriate for children or teens to start using social networking sites?
Most sites, like canisaysomething.com, require users to be at least 13 years old to create an account. Besides issues of adult content and maturity, is it healthy for children and young teens to be growing up with so much technology? Even if they can't create user accounts, how many of them have iPhones and are on the internet all of the time anyways?

I see 7 year olds with cell phones!! Its soo funny and then you ask the parents why they have it and they say that its in case they get lost but seeing a 7 year old with thier own cellphone is just so crazy to me!! but it is funny!!

I totally agree with

I totally agree with everything you said. i would like to see this die out eventually. It's too stressful to be that connected to everyone 24-7 for years on end.

I work in a school that incorporates lots of useful technology. Students learn to podcast, research, edit video and images, etc. If a site is created specifically for and about kids and monitored properly, I see nothing wrong with a little social networking. However most sites are geared to adults with threads that are inappropriate for kids. Let kids learn to make friends the old fashioned way before letting them lose to the crazies that potentially lurk on the internet.

I feel like everyone my age is married to their iPhones and Facebooks. They have google maps on their phones, so they never look up directions, they check their email constantly, they text during class and they feel the need to post everything they're doing. Sometimes it's frustrating because people can't enjoy anything without being hooked up to technology all of the time. I don't know that all technology actually benefits us. I could be just as happy without having all of those things, but now I feel obligated to have them.
