The Staten Island Ferry Crashes Once Again
Riding the Staten Island Ferry can be a beautiful and inexpensive New York outing. The ferry sells beers and snacks, and you get a great view of the Statue of Liberty—and better yet, all this is free. However, the series of crashes over the years can put a damper on the trip.
Saturday morning, the ferry crashed into the St. George terminal on Staten Island injuring 60 out of the 252 people plus 18 employees that were on the boat at the time of the crash. 10 of those injures were said to be serious.
The Staten Island Ferry is known for its infamous crash in 2003 where several passengers died. The cause of the accident was the pilot’s falling asleep due to medication. The accident that occurred last year in 2009, is more similar to the crash yesterday as both were causes of mechanical malfunction, rather than human error.
