Post Office Cuts Likely

By GARY BAUMGARTEN
Paltalk News Network

Losses of over $200 billion in the next 10 years are estimated by the postmaster general of the United States - unless the Post Office is permitted to drastically amend the way it does business.

To obtain solvency, it looks like the Post Office may have to cut Saturday deliveries, increase postal rates, take longer to deliver mail and perhaps resort to layoffs.

This may be the prudent solution - but it does nothing to make the Post Office competitive.

FedEx or UPS guarantees deliveries overnight - at a premium price of course. Email is instantaneous. How many of us, as we become more comfortable with the concept, have resorted to paying bills online?

Heck, many of us actually recieve the bills online now. That's a double whammy to the Post Office.

Neither rain, nor sleet, nor snow may stop the Post Office. But it seems poor management, competition and new technology can.

The Post Office is cutting off its nose to spite its face!

I can understand why the Post Office wants to cut Saturday deliveries, increase their rates and impose layoffs. With everyone paying their bills on-line and using IM, e-mails and social networking sites to stay in touch with friends, family and co-workers, no one's sending letters in the mail anymore. The Post Office doesn't have the business or the need to be as relevant as it was even 10 years ago.

But I'll personally be upset if the Post Office cuts delivery days and raises its rates. While the workers need days off, I actually still look forward to getting the mail six days a week! Also, the workers will have so much extra work on Mondays if service is cut on Saturday.

Also, if people are turning to e-mail and paying bills on-line because they can't afford the current stamp price, how are they going to afford it when the rates are increased again? The Post office is cutting off it's nose to spite its face, as the saying goes...it will see another decrease in business if they increase stamp rates!

Paying bills and even

Paying bills and even receiving bills via the internet has been going on for years, yet the US Post Office has not taken advantage of any technology. And over the years they have increased prices and that has only pushed people like me into using the internet. It's faster, easier, and my payment gets to its destination in minutes. Plus it's free. The post office should've started realizing this years ago-maybe they could have set up email accounts for people or something like that. But the management of the post office is still under the impression that people are still using snail mail-some are, but each year as the cost of stamps increase, even these users will turn to doing everything on line.
I feel bad for those employees that are becoming obsolete due to this gross mismanagement which has turned a blind eye toward somehow incorporating 21st century technology to improve services.
If they don't do something to change, I predict that in the next decade the US Post Office wil go the way of the Pony Express, the shoe cobbler, and the telephone operator.

Maybe they could use technology as well

The Post office is still needed to send packages, or they could try a campagin where recieving hand written letters is romantic. They could guarantee delivery or a credit will be sent. I really hate to see all these lay-offs and lost renevue because of technology. It makes life too convienant for people and they are forced to stay home and just live their lives through computers.

Back in the day you actually had to go out and pay your bill at the store or go to the post office to deliever get stamps and mail. I remember when I discovered ebay, I always had to go to the post office to get a money order and send it out. Now most ebay auctions only take Paypal. :-(

This happened because the Post Office has not adapted to the new market and the new needs and demands. It became obsolete.
Fedex and UPS and other carrier services play hardball and they are crushing the Post Offices. However I feel that every country needs to have a Post Office service, it should be a service provided at a discount price for the whole population.
It takes aprox. $55 to send a letter from Fedex to Europe, and it costs not even $2 to send it through the Post Office. Both ways take 3-5 business days.
