New York Mayor Bloomberg Hires New Environmental Commissioner After 13-Mont

New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, who won an unprecedented third term this past November, has announced that after a 13-month search, he has finally hired a new environmental commissioner for the city. His official pick is Caswell F. Holloway IV, a 36-year-old currently working as a City Hall aide.

But policy experts believe Mayor Bloomberg only chose Holloway, who has worked as a chief of staff to Edward Skyler, a deputy mayor, since 2006 because he is currently in his inner circle. They are also questioning why the mayor didn’t choose someone with more environmental experience.

However, Mayor Bloomberg is defending the appointment of Holloway, saying he is a problem-solver who has initiated numerous projects that have benefited the city. Such projects include a citywide waste management system and plans to revive the Gowanus Canal. The mayor also said Holloway is qualified for the position because of his background.

The mayor’s office is also trying to defend his choice by claiming that Holloway is new to his staff. The office pointed out that Holloway didn’t follow the mayor from the headquarters of his company, Bloomberg LP, to City Hall in 2001, when he was first elected as mayor.

At least Bloomberg has taken inititave towards the environment

There must be a reason that Mayor Bloomberg has chosen Caswell Holloway as the environmental commissioner. I guessing that the interview was a very lengthy process since it took 13 months. It's better to have someone, people think is inexperienced than to not have anyone at all solving environmental issues in New York City, the 5th biggest city in the world.

The interview process should have been long, in order for Bloomberg to choose the best possible candidate. Environmental issues are hot topics these days, and as the largest city in the U.S., New York needs someone to overlook them.

However, taking over a year to hire someone should mean the person is qualified for the job. I don't know everything about Holloway's background, but if he is underexperienced for the job, Bloomberg should have known that before hiring him.
