New Study Finds Sugary Soda Can Lead to Pancreatic Cancer

Drinking two or more sugary sodas per week will drastically increase a person’s chance of developing pancreatic cancer, a 14-year study conducted by the Singapore Chinese Health Study discovered. The results, which were published in this month’s issue of the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, were corroborated by a research team at the University of Minnesota.

The study, which was conducted on 60,000 people in Singapore, found that those who drink high doses of soda have an 87 percent higher risk of developing the disease. Dr. Mark Pereira, the study’s lead researcher, concluded that frequent soda drinkers have other poor health habits, including smoking and eating red meat, two factors that also lead to pancreatic cancer.

Researchers came to the conclusion that sugary soda interferes with insulin levels, which can lead to pancreas cancer. This discovery can help save lives, as 230,000 people are diagnosed with the cancer each year. Other risk factors include genetics, ethnicity, age, obesity and excessive alcohol consumption.

In light of this discovery, the American Heart Association recommends that women intake less than 6.5 teaspoons of added sugar a day and men consume less than 9.5 teaspoons. A can of soda often contains 13 teaspoons.

Actually I thought that in

Actually I thought that in the US our sodas no longer use processed sugar; our soda is sweetened with fructose corn syrup, which also is not good for you in excess. Diet sodas are the worse yet-full of chemicals. Here's a suggestion for a soda replacement.:
Carbonated water, a little lemon or lime juice (just a tinge) & stevia, a natural sweetener. Combined tastes similar to a 7-up without the bad stuff.

Carbonated water is definitely a good alternative to soda.

I think that the US does put fructose corn syrup, but just like processed sugar, it's not healthy. People should try to avoid processed sugar and corn syrup as much as possible, and stick to healthier drinks, like water. Water is definitely less costly!

I definitely enjoy soda, but I know I should cut down on it, because everyone always says how bad it is. I always drink diet soda, but I'm sure that's not all that great either. It's definitely a challenge!
