FDA Implementing New Bans on Sale and Advertising of Tobacco
With the passage of last year’s Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, the FDA will now be able to regulate tobacco sales. According to WebMD, the FDA will be implementing more bans on the sale and advertising of tobacco products, particularly to children and teens, on June 22.
Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius is defending the new national bans, which includes banning: the sale of cigarettes or smokeless tobacco to anyone under age 18; tobacco sponsorship of any “athletic, musical, or other social or cultural event, or team;” and the sale of cigarettes via vending machines or self-service displays “except in very limited situations.”
At a news conference, Sebelius said that “Despite a ban on direct marketing to young Americans, tobacco companies have still found a way to reach out to them. It’s no accident that Marlboro, Camel, and Newport, the three brands that spend the most on ads, are more preferred by children…”
Leading the enforcement on the bans will be Health and Human Services Assistant Secretary Howard K. Koh, MD, MPH. He said the Department of Health and Human Services and the FDA will help states inspect retail sites and enforce the new bans.
