Cardiovascular-Related Deaths, Suicide Higher Among Prostate Cancer Patient

The first few months after being diagnosed with prostate cancer, men are twice as likely to die, but not from the disease; according to a new study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, prostate cancer patients are more likely to commit suicide or die from heart-related issues, as compared to the general population.

The study also concludes that prostate cancer patients also develop anxiety and mood disturbance. Researchers at Harvard Medical School performed the study, analyzing nearly 350,000 men diagnosed with the disease between 1979 and 2004 through a national database of cancer statistics. After their initial diagnosis, 148 of the men committed suicide and 6,845 died from cardiovascular issues, such as heart attacks.

The suicide rate was 90 percent higher in the first three months, and 40 percent higher in the year following diagnosis, compared to cancer-free men. Deaths linked to cardiovascular issues was more than twice as high initially after diagnosis, and nine percent higher during the first year.

The suicide rate is thought to be related to the men’s high distress rate. The study also suggests that the cardiovascular deaths are related to the psychological stress caused by the diagnosis.

I wonder if this high suicide

I wonder if this high suicide rate is appliacble to any type of cancer in men. It is a conception that men appear to nurse small illnesses like colds a lot longer than women do. So with that said, one would think that a man suffering from a catastrophic illness would be completely distraught leading them to tax their hearts with stress & potentially leading them to suicide. Just a thought.

I would think that hearing that you have any type of cancer would be very stressful. If people can't come to terms with developing a disease in which they might need chemo or radiation, it's certainly understandable whey they would get depressed. That's why scientists need to find a cure for all cancers.

I believe that one thing that

I believe that one thing that is really important for you health is what you eat...and I believe that a lot of people don't know how to eat and that is also very important for your body; in order to be healthy.

wow that's very

wow that's very disturbing...
i wonder how a diagnosis of prostate cancer threatens a man's identity and whether that has something to do with the suicide rates... i know with breast cancer, although very different, many women feel less "womanly," which is shame.

Thanks for the comments!

I think it is important, to prevent any kind of illness, disease or cancer, to watch what you eat, exercise and lead a healthy lifestyle. While some illnesses aren't totally preventable, people should try to stop as many as they can.

Prostate cancer probably, to some level, affects men the same way breast cancer affects women, as they both deal with gender. But having breast cancer doesn't make a woman less of a woman, and prostate cancer doesn't make a man less of a man.
