People have dreams when they move to this city. I know I do. But the thing is, dreams don’t happen overnight. Instead many slave in obscurity bussing tables, temping and doing other odd jobs. We do this to pay the bills hoping the big break comes. One odd job I have is a singing telegram delivery person. I go around dressed in various costumes and serenade people with songs like Happy Birthday or I Love You or I’m Sorry or fill in the blank, whatever you want.
This past Valentine’s Day I ended up singing to fashion designer Betsy Johnson. During fashion week New York was bustling and hustling. Betsy Johnson, who is high profile, had Kelly Osbourne as a part of her fashion show. As a thank you Kelly Osbourne sent a pink gorilla. Guess who was dawning the pink monkey suit? Moi. I sang for Betsy and then got a hug from both her and Kelly. Kelly Osbourne for the record is very small and quite trim in person. Rehab and weight loss programs do wonders.
Another job I have is a red carpet interviewer. This past fall I did an event for an ultimate fighting and boxing organization. I interviewed Vinny Maddalone who got his butt kicked by Evander Holyfield. Granted, Maddalone is tough but not as tough as someone who got his ear bit off by Mike Tyson. I also interviewed Darryl Schoonover who is quite well known as an ultimate fighter and I will confess to having taken to. Last but certainly not least I interviewed Natasha Komis of Paris Hilton BFF. Natasha is a musician and model who apparently was voted off the show, nonetheless she struck me as cool and confident.
Another skill I have is I am a puppeteer and ventriloquist. My friend Matt Sky and I have a web series with puppets. We shoot in his Greenpoint loft simply because we have more space and the light is better. This past week we had Natasha Komis on the show. Ted, who is operated by Matt, asks all the important questions. May Wilson, the blonde puppet operated myself, plays the fame struck groupie. I have embedded the video for all to see.
In the Rocky Horror Picture Show has a point. Aside from Frankenfurter being the transsexual from Transylvania the theme is don’t dream it be it. Sure I might not be rolling in money and may never be. But the truth is, someday I will have quite a few stories to tell the grandkids. Love April
People in the world today seem obsessed with making as much money as they can and being remembered for their job performance, whether or not they love their jobs. While making money and being recongized by your peers are important, doing a job you love is the most important thing. If you dread what you do, you won't love life. People should do what they need to do to make money, but aim to get a job they love.
